It is a short story by David Belasco and Luther Long, by the same name. I'm not saying that Belasco and Long did not have resource to Loti; I have no info about that. The likelihood of the Belasco source is strengthened by the fact that Belasco also wrote "Girl of the Golden West," which Puccini did use as a source for that opera. Also, I am searching for a book I read and lost, entitled "Writings of South (or Southeast) Asian Women." That might even have been the subtitle. Or "South Asian Women Writing." I suspect it may be the source of a piece of fiction about organ donors in India. Any ideas? Thanks.
